Book Intro

For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Mary Alice. This isn’t the name I was born with, but it’s my name as far as you know. It’s the one I chose. Before I ever put words on paper, I decided I would hide my identity not because I was worried about people treating me differently once I became rich or my book became a New York Times bestseller (trust me, there isn’t a bone in my body that believes that).

I’m not that confident.

The not so pretty truth is, I chose to write under a alias name because I’m not confident. I don’t always feel worthy or wise enough to be writing a book. Who am I to do this? I’ve struggled with my sense of value for as long as I can remember.

A little about my background: I grew up in Sacramento, California with my father, my stepmother, and my two older brothers. My parents worked incredibly hard to make sure we always had a clean house, clothes on our backs, and full, healthy bellies. But my opinions weren’t always welcomed, and my words didn’t always matter. Over time, that chipped away at my self worth. There were many factors beyond just that, and as you keep reading, you’ll learn more about how my mindset formed and evolved.

I’ve come a long way since then, but whenever I try something new, those old feelings come back like a wrecking ball. Some habits die hard. So, to spare myself embarrassment and an overload of opinions, I chose the alias Mary Alice. You could say it’s my defense mechanism—free and clear from feedback, at least for now.

Enough said.

Mary Alice isn’t just any ordinary name, though. It still holds meaning. A group of girlfriends and I were obsessed with a show you may have heard of called Desperate Housewives. While Mary Alice was only briefly alive in the series—she died very early on, I think in the first episode—she remained the narrator throughout every season. That made her a key character. And now, she’s the narrator of my story too.

With that said, I highly recommend watching it. Just not yet. I’d prefer you finish my book first.

So for now… I’m Mary.

Life has a funny way of challenging us. It presents moments of joy and success, and just as often, it hands us trials that test our very limits. Yet, through all the highs and lows, one truth remains constant: it’s not what happens to us, but how we choose to see it.

In a world filled with uncertainty, it’s easy to get lost in the darkness of disappointment or heartbreak. But within every storm cloud, there’s a glimmer of light, a silver lining. This book is a reflection on that light and the power it holds to transform our lives.

Glass Half Full is not just about optimism, it’s about perspective. It’s about seeing the potential, the beauty, and the growth in situations that seem hopeless. It’s about realizing that even when the glass feels half empty, we can still find fulfillment in what’s left.

Through my own stories of struggle and triumph, I’ve learned that life doesn’t hand us guarantees. But what it does offer is the opportunity to choose how we react to its twists and turns. Whether it's grieving the loss of a loved one, navigating life's transitions, or celebrating small victories, there’s always a way to find meaning and hope.

As you turn these pages, I invite you to journey with me into the mindset of abundance and gratitude. Together, we’ll explore the profound impact of choosing to focus on what we have rather than what we lack. Because, in the end, it’s not about how full or empty the glass is it’s about appreciating the water that’s already there.
